BOTOX®

At Complexion Med Spa

Botox® Cosmetic

For a long time, many looked to the facelift as the only treatment for aging, sagging and wrinkled skin. Today, our clients are looking for a more graceful solution to aging. And Botox® is among the world’s most popular and time-tested injectables for aging issues such as fine lines, wrinkles, creases, furrows and folds that mar the appearance and destroy one’s self-esteem. These safe, non-invasive compounds work by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that are responsible for our most frequent facial contractions, such as smiling, squinting, frowning or yawning. The result is radiant, smooth skin that glows providing you with a bright and beautiful complexion.

Smooth away wrinkles and fine lines with Botox® at Complexion Med Spa. This revolutionary treatment is safe, effective, and FDA-approved to help create a younger-looking appearance with little to no downtime.

At Complexion Med Spa, we know Botox®! Our certified physician and nurses are more than just someone with a medical degree . . . they are certified, trained, and offer over 20 years of experience as professional injectors.

/ Botox® VS Cosmetic Surgery

There are a lot of factors to keep in mind when considering BOTOX® or cosmetic surgery. We’ve written out a few of the biggest comparison points here that you can consider. Of course, this is not an all-inclusive comparison and you should still do your own research but this should at least give you a good starting point.

Botox®
Lower Cost

Treatments can cost as little as a couple of hundred dollars. Even though the cost of regular treatments may add up over time, many find it easier to budget for rather than a single large upfront cost.

Temporary Results

Results are temporary which allows you the ability to test different treatments over time to find what works best.

Minor Side Effects and Little Risk

Typical side effects are minor such as headaches, mild nausea, mild pain at the site of the injection…etc. (contact us for all possible side effects). Other severe allergic reactions can happen but are rare.

Virtually No Recovery Time
Most can continue with their day immediately after treatment. Pain/swelling/redness usually subsides within hours to a couple days after treatment.
Practically Instant Results

Results from injections can be seen almost immediately and improve over the next few days as swelling and redness goes away.

Cosmetic Surgery
Higher Cost
Surgeries such as facelifts, eye lifts, rhinoplasty…etc. cost thousands of dollars. Many people can require financing to pay for treatment.
Results Are Permanent

This is a double-edged sword. If your results are good, it’s nice that they will last permanently. But if your results are not good, you’re pretty much stuck with them (unless you want to pay for another surgery).

Higher Risk of Complications or Infection
Depending on the surgery you’re getting you may need to be put under general anesthesia which comes with additional risks. Additionally with any cuts that are done there is inherent risk of infection.
Longer Recovery Time
Depending on the procedure you get done you may need a few weeks or more to fully recover.
Results Are Slow
It can take weeks or months for full effect of your procedure to be seen.

Botox® Cosmetic History

The history of BOTOX® Cosmetic is a remarkable story of how a potent substance found in nature has been harnessed for both medical and aesthetic benefits.
Years ago, the Allergan company acquired a product called onabotulinumtoxinA and saw its potential for therapeutic use. The company conducted clinical trials and submitted the data to the FDA, which shepherded the product’s first approved therapeutic use.

1989: THE FIRST FDA APPROVAL
OnabotulinumtoxinA received FDA approval for therapeutic use in 1989 and was rebranded BOTOX®. Through expanded research into aesthetic uses Allergan later commenced clinical trials to study the treatment’s safety and efficacy for moderate to severe frown lines.

2002: THE FIRST TREATMENT APPROVED FOR COSMETIC USE
On April 15, 2002, the FDA approved BOTOX® as a temporary aesthetic treatment for moderate to severe frown lines in adults and requested the product be marketed as BOTOX® Cosmetic to distinguish aesthetic from therapeutic uses. It was the first treatment of its kind to be approved for an aesthetic use and today is the only product FDA-approved to make moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines look better in adults.

/11 Tips to Make the most our of your Treatment

The benefits of BOTOX® are vast and numerous. Whether you want to revitalize your appearance, prevent signs of aging, or use BOTOX® for any of its medical purposes, there are some key ways to make the most from your treatment.
1. ONLY SEEK TREATMENT FROM A PROFESSIONAL

BOTOX® treatment is a skill that requires training. Always make sure that you are working with a doctor, nurse, or a certified trained professional injector to prevent treatment mishaps like the frozen look or unbalanced results.

2. COMMUNICATE

Your consultation is the perfect time to develop a commutative rapport with your doctor or injector. You should reveal any medications or supplements you take because some can interfere with treatment. Discuss your aesthetic goals and what you hope to achieve from treatment. Clear communication will help you get the best results.

3. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS PRECISELY
You’ll receive instructions to follow before and after your treatment. Please follow these instructions carefully. Although instructions can sometimes seem like mere suggestions, they are based on years of scientific observation. Following the instructions provided to you can maximize the benefits of your treatment.
4. DO NOT TOUCH
Avoid touching the injection site after your appointment. Remember, BOTOX® is a liquid that’s meticulously placed in targeted areas to create the best-looking results. Rubbing or massaging your BOTOX® treatment area can cause the serum to spread to unintended regions and affect the overall outcome. Your best bet is to keep your hands away from the treatment area for at least 24 hours.
5. STAY HYDRATED
Drink plenty of water before and after your appointment to make the most from treatment. Proper hydration goes a long way in keeping the body healthy and delivering ideal cosmetic treatment results. Avoid drinking alcohol or other dehydrating beverages after your appointment.
6. LIMIT SUN EXPOSURE
The sun is great for Vitamin D and does wonders for reducing stress. But even too much of a good thing . . . isn’t good. It’s no secret that spending too much time in the sun magnifies fine lines and wrinkles. Limit your sun exposure to get more out of your BOTOX® treatment. Sunglasses, wide-brimmed hats, and other protective accessories can keep you guarded when outside. Wear sunscreen every day and apply it at least 15 minutes before going out.
7. EAT WELL
A healthy diet is one of the most effective ways to keep your skin glowing and prevent signs of aging. Avoid eating processed foods and those with high sugar or sodium content. Instead, add fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet to keep your BOTOX® doing what it’s meant to do.
8. STAND UP TALL
Don’t lie down, recline, or do excessive bending for four to six hours after your BOTOX® session because it takes time to settle into place. Although there aren’t any long-term consequences for lying down too soon, we recommend that you remain erect to allow the BOTOX® to work its magic.
9. SUPPLEMENT WITH ZINC
According to a 2012 BOTOX® study, supplementing with 50mg of zinc could help your results last longer. Individuals in the study had BOTOX® treatments that lasted 30% longer than usual when taking the supplement for at least four days before their appointment. The reason for this is that botulinum toxin, the active ingredient in BOTOX®, relies on zinc for effectiveness.
10. GET REGULAR TOUCH-UPS
BOTOX® gets better the more you use it. In the beginning, you may need to come in for touch-ups more frequently. As time passes, many patients notice the effects lasting longer than they did before. Visiting us for regular maintenance can help you achieve the best long-term results.
11. MITIGATE STRESS
Cortisol, the stress hormone, prevents your body from producing the skin-essential proteins collagen and elastin. Without these proteins, your skin is more prone to creating fine lines and wrinkles. Find healthy ways to de-stress by adopting an exercise or meditation routine.

/ WHAT IS BOTOX® AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

BOTOX® is a neurotoxic protein which is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Clostridium botulinum is an organism found in the natural environment where it is largely inactive and non-toxic. Clostridium botulinum, the organism from which BOTOX® is derived, is found in inactive form in the natural environment, including in the forest and cultivated soils, and in the sediment of lakes, streams, coastal and untreated waters.

BOTOX® targets one of the underlying causes of frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines — the repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, smiling and raising the eyebrows over the years. Your specialist will inject these muscles with BOTOX® to temporarily reduce muscle activity. You will begin to notice a visible smoothing of the frown lines between your brows, your crow’s feet lines and your forehead lines.

/ WHAT AREAS DOES BOTOX® TREAT?

"Crows" Feet

Smile or Laugh Lines

The areas to the sides of the mouth (perioral muscles) which are generally visible when smiling or laughing.

Forehead Wrinkles

HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE?
Depending and how many targeted areas your specialist is injecting, the process could take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes.
IS IT PAINFUL?
Some patients report that being injected with BOTOX® feels like a pinch. Your specialist may use ice to numb the treatment area. Or, if you are concerned about discomfort, a topical numbing cream may be applied before administering your treatment.
HOW MUCH RESEARCH HAS GONE INTO BOTOX®?
When you choose BOTOX®, you can trust in its established track record. Backed by over 16 years of published studies, BOTOX® is the most widely researched and studied treatment of its kind, approved for use in 95 countries. The safety and efficacy of BOTOX® have been described in more than 528 peer-reviewed articles in scientific and medical journals.
IS BOTOX® ONLY FOR WOMEN?
NOT at all! Many men make BOTOX® part of what they do to care for their appearance.
The number of men choosing treatments like BOTOX® has risen fast – in the past three years alone, men have received over one million botulinum toxin treatments. When surveyed, the majority of men say they want to look good and they’re bothered by the changes they see in the mirror. 80% would choose to treat their crow’s feet first, while 74% would prioritize their forehead lines, and 60% would most like to treat their frown lines.
DO I NEED TO BE OVER THE AGE OF 40 TO START USING BOTOX®?
It’s not your age that determines when BOTOX® is right for you, it’s the severity of your lines. In fact, 64% of plastic surgeons report seeing a rise in cosmetic surgery or injectable treatments for patients in their early 30’s.

The truth is, everyone’s lines form differently. The timing can be influenced by a combination of factors, from cellular changes that may occur over time, to reduction of collagen, to genetic factors, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment.

Whenever your lines start to bother you, go speak with your doctor. They can help you determine if treatment is right for you.

HOW LONG IS THE RECOVERY/DOWNTIME TIME AFTER TREATMENT?
Treatment requires minimal downtime. So, you can return to your daily routine immediately after you leave your specialist’s office.
HOW MANY INJECTIONS WILL I RECEIVE?
Treatment with BOTOX® is customized to your goals and needs. When you meet with your specialist, he or she will determine the appropriate treatment for any areas you wish to address, including moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines. Remember, only BOTOX® Cosmetic is approved to treat all three of these areas.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE TREATMENT? ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
Immediately following the injections, the injection site may become slightly red and tender. This is a normal reaction in which the body has to both the needle and the BOTOX® solution. These reactions usually subside within a few hours to 1 day after the treatment.

More serious side effects can happen but are extremely rare. These reactions can include severe allergic reactions, skin rashes, dizziness or trouble breathing. We will provide you with all the information regarding this prior to your treatment.

The best results will typically appear a few days or so following your treatment. Over time, the results become less noticeable as your body gradually removes the neuro-toxin from the muscle tissues over time returning complete movement to the treated muscles.
