/ Why Choose Complexion?

At Complexion Med Spa, we use hospital-grade sanitizer to thoroughly clean and disinfect each sun bed and room after each and every use. We take extra lengths in maintaining the cleanliness of our rooms and our sun beds. Our professional staff is also happy to answer any questions you may have and we are here to guide you in the smartest tanning practices.

Ever used a sub bed but found yourself getting little to no results? This problem most often has to do with the bulbs. While tanning bulbs may turn on and light for up to 10,000 hours, their effectiveness begins to seriously diminish after just 1,000 hours. At Complexion Med Spa, we make it a top priority to consistently replace our bulbs at a maximum of 500 hours of use, so that you will always achieve the results you are looking for.

Amenities included with your tanning session at Complexion Med Spa:
  • Sanitized Goggles
  • Bottled Water
  • Fresh Face Towel
  • Astringent (Skin Cleanser and Toner)

Complexion Med Spa follows all guidelines and requirements through the State of Michigan’s Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity “Public Act 368 of 2008”. Please click here to learn more.

/ Benefits Of Tanning

Vitamin D

The UVB rays produced by tanning beds (particularly those with low-pressure lamps) trigger the body’s natural production of vitamin D. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium from food, which can support strong, healthy bones and teeth.

Energy & Mood

Higher Energy and a Better Mood: Several studies have found that UV exposure is linked to higher energy levels and improved moods. In one 2018 article titled “Effect of ultraviolet light on mood, depressive disorders and well-being,” published in the journal Photo-dermatology, Photo-immunology and Photo-medicine, noted that out of seven studies, six found that UV exposure had a positive effect on the participants’ moods and energy level.

Skin Conditions

Helps Treat Skin Conditions: According to an article published in the journal Dermatologic Therapy, “A Review of the Use of Tanning Beds as a Dermatological Treatment,” tanning beds — especially those with low-pressure, higher-UVB lamps — can help to treat a variety of skin conditions. These include psoriasis, eczema and acne.
Tanning Beds

/ How to get the best tan possible and sun beds that work best for your skin type

So far, we’ve talked about how tanning beds work and discussed their benefits and risks. Now, you’re ready to find out how you can get the bronzed glow you want.

Here are our top tips for getting a great tan when using our sun beds:

Prepare Properly

Before you tan, be sure to exfoliate your skin in the shower or bath and then. You might also want to put on an indoor tanning lotion before you start your tanning session.

Know Your Skin Type

For indoor tanning purposes, there are six skin types, with type one being the lightest and type six being the darkest. People with type one skin should generally only use low-pressure lamps for just a couple minutes at a time, while people with type six skin can usually use high-pressure lamps for longer periods of time. As a general rule of thumb, your first tanning sessions should be no longer than six minutes, or fewer if you have very fair skin.

Use Eye Protection

Proper eye protection is absolutely crucial, as a lack of adequate protection can cause serious damage to your eyes. At Complexion Med Spa, we provide you with a sanitized pair of goggles to use during your tanning session. Just remember, regular sunglasses or other types of DIY protection are inadequate.

Extend Your Tan Between Sessions

Using a specialized tan extender or sunless self-tanner can help your tan last longer, meaning you can go for longer periods without tanning. This serves to protect your skin from unnecessary UV damage.

Attention: For skin conditions ONLY! Clients with skin conditions such as Acne or Psoriasis, should not use lotions and should only use tanning beds that offer U.V. B rays (low-pressure sun beds) to dry their skin and reduce the appearance of unwanted conditions.

/ THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LOW-PRESSURE & HIGH-PRESSURE SUN BEDS AND WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU

Tanning lamps fall into 2 major categories:
Low-Pressure and High-Pressure

A

Low-Pressure Lamps

Low-Pressure lamps emit a more balanced mix of UVA and UVB light. Helps prepare for outdoor sun exposure such as vacations to help build a good base tan which prevents sunburn from the natural sun.

A

High-Pressure Lamps

High-Pressure lamps emit almost exclusively UVA light. Delivers a more intense tanning experience within a shorter period of time. In general, this makes high-pressure lamps too powerful for very light/pale skin tones. It is good for building a quick tan for things like upcoming social events such as wedding, birthday party, etc.

UVA rays penetrate the skin deeper than UVB rays can. UVA rays reach the lower layers of the epidermis and produce melanocytes, which produce melanin, and melanin is the pigment responsible for tanning, which essentially tans your skin. Also, because UVA light penetrates deeper into the skin, it generally does not cause sunburns or redness.

UVB rays don’t penetrate the skin as much as UVA rays. They mostly affect the outer layers of the skin. UVB rays can be more damaging to the skin depending on your skin type and overexposure. Overexposure to this type of UV light may cause sunburn. Typically, tanning beds emit fewer UVB rays in comparison to the natural rays of the sun.

/ Frequently Asked Questions

IS UV TANNING SAFE?

Yes, but just like everything else, moderation is key. And too much of anything is never a good thing. The US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) regulations prohibit more than 1 tanning session in a single day.

Our staff of certified technicians will also work with you to determine what is a safe amount of UV exposure for you based on your skin type.

DO I HAVE TO WEAR EYEWEAR?
Yes, your eyes are sensitive to UV light and should not be exposed while tanning. The skin on your eyelids is the thinnest on your body, and is not thick enough to sufficiently block UV light. If you do not wear protective eye wear, you are putting your eyesight at risk. It is also a federal law.

SHOULD I USE AN INDOOR TANNING LOTION?
Yes, and no. Indoor tanning lotions, also known as “bronzers” or “accelerators, will help to keep your skin healthy and hydrated as you tan and will also help absorb UV rays for better results. This will allow your skin to tan about twice as fast and it will keep your tan much longer. Our indoor tanning lotions are specially formulated to provide your skin with moisture that is necessary before and after tanning.

It is particularly important for individuals with sensitive skin to use a tanning lotion when tanning indoors so that they can protect fair skin and also help to prevent burning and painful after effects that can accompany skin damage from burning.

We offer a quality line of lotions, moisturizers, and accelerators to keep your skin from drying out while tanning.

CAN I USE OUTDOOR OILS AND LOTIONS IN THE TANNING BED?
No! Outdoor products should ONLY be used outdoors, as they can cause a film on the acrylic. This actually inhibits the tanning process, rather than acting as an amplifying agent. There are many excellent indoor tanning products that Complexion Med Spa offers for that purpose. Feel free to ask our certified and trained staff for recommendations.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR WHEN I TAN?
It’s entirely up to you! Some people choose to wear a swimsuit, just as they would at the beach. But because of the privacy of indoor tanning, most tan in the nude to avoid tan lines. Any skin that has never been exposed to ultraviolet light before will be more sensitive. These parts must acquire a tan slowly. Cut down the exposure time for these areas to 1/3 or less of the total time recommended by your tanning professional. When you can’t see any tan lines on your body at all, it’s ok to expose that skin the same length of time as the rest of your body.
HOW TAN WILL I GET?
This is determined by your skin type, the amount of time you tan for per session, and the time period apart from when you last tanned. Some, who possess a more fair or pale skin tone, will take a bit longer to achieve a darker tan. People who tan over a period of months will most commonly achieve a deeper, darker tan than those who tan for say, a couple of weeks.
I'VE NEVER TANNED BEFORE, HOW LONG SHOULD I TAN FOR THE FIRST TIME?
This is why we have certified technicians. The amount of time you should tan is based on your skin type. Some people are able to tan for longer periods of time than others initially. As you build a base tan you will be able to tan for longer periods of time.
WHAT IS THE LONGEST I CAN TAN FOR?
It depends on the bed and your skin type. At Complexion Med Spa, our bulbs are always fresh and of the highest quality, therefore the maximum time for any of our beds is 12 minutes. Some beds have shorter maximum time limits based on the amount of UV rays they put out (in short). The bulbs also play a huge role. If you tan in one of our beds after going to a tanning salon that doesn’t change their bulbs often, it is entirely possible to burn in the exact same type of bed by us. This is why it is important to listen to what our certified staff has to say as far as the amount of time you should tan for.
HOW OLD DO I NEED TO BE TO TAN?
18 years old. If you are under the age of 18, we require a signed consent form (which we provide) by a legal guardian.
HOW DO I PROTECT A FRESH TATTOO?
The ink that is used in a fresh tattoo is UV sensitive and it is important not to expose a fresh tattoo to sunlight or indoor tanning equipment. We recommend that you cover the tattooed area completely or do not tan until the skin has healed. After the skin is healed, tattoos will still fade with continued exposure to both indoor and outdoor UV light. We recommend you use a non-petroleum lip balm of at least SPF 20 to help reduce fading of your tattoo.
CAN I TAN WHEN I AM PREGNANT?
This is really a question that should be asked between you and your doctor. We do have clients that have tanned while pregnant however it is entirely up to you to determine what is right for you. One concern about UV radiation exposure during pregnancy is that UV rays can break down folic acid. Folic acid is a crucial building block that your baby needs to develop a healthy nervous system.
