Microneedling

At Complexion Med Spa, sometimes the oldest rituals can be just as effective as the newest technology. This also applies to the ancient practice of Microneedling. With all of the advanced anti-aging and skin care procedures available today, the thought of piercing the skin with hundreds of tiny needles seems decidedly low tech. However, Microneedling is able to garner just as effective results as some of the most expensive cosmetic procedures in the industry today. Even better, it is relatively inexpensive, has minimal discomfort, and very little down time is required after treatment.

A form of Microneedling was used thousands of years ago as part of ancient Chinese medicine. In more recent history, skin needling was used to treat aesthetic conditions in Germany in the early 1900’s. In the late 1990’s, Microneedling as we know it today really began to take off. It was first pioneered by a dermatologist in Canada, and then spread to the United States and Europe. Now, dermatology practices and skin clinics all over the world are offering this simple and effective treatment. But with the rise in popularity comes at home, off-brand solutions that some may try in order to avoid a visit to a professional office. Do yourself a favor, and please, don’t do it yourself! Nothing compares to the depth, quality assurance, and safety that comes with a professional Microneedling treatment at Complexion Med Spa in West Bloomfield, MI!

/ Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING?
Clinically referred to as ‘collagen induction therapy’ or ‘CIT’, and often referred to as ‘dermarolling’, it is a treatment designed to invoke the healing response in the body by causing micro-trauma in a carefully controlled manner. The main aim is to amplify the absorption of your skin and haircare products plus support the production of collagen and elastin. It is a rejuvenating and strengthening treatment which helps fade scars, minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, reduces enlarged pores, and improves pigmentation for a fresher, younger complexion. Microneedling also stimulates the hair follicles which aids in reducing hair loss
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Microneedling uses a handheld device with hundreds of medical-grade, ultra-fine, sharp, titanium needles designed to roll across the skin to create thousands of tiny little pathways. During the process, these series of ultra-fine needles are injected into the dermis and epidermis. These micro wounds tell the body to start repairing itself, and as a result, collagen and elastin begin to regenerate. These tiny perforations also allow the introduction of important nutrients, vitamins, minerals and skin medications, guaranteeing that they will be well absorbed.
WHERE CAN MICRONEEDLING BE APPLIED?
Face; Around the Eyes; Mouth; Chest; Hands; Arms; Scalp; Neck; Legs; Stomach; Back
IS THE TREATMENT PAINFUL?
Everyone’s pain tolerance is different. We do apply a numbing cream prior to the treatment. Some people report slight discomfort while others do not feel anything at all.
WHAT ABOUT DOWNTIME AND RECOVERY?
After the treatment, you may experience some redness or slight swelling in the treated area. You may compare it to having a mild case of sunburn which typically goes away after 48 hours. In the hours and days that follow Microneedling, your skin may feel tighter than usual. It may also be extra sensitive to the sun, so you will want to protect your skin from the rays through sunblock and a sunhat. Be careful not to pick at the skin so it may heal properly.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS DO I NEED?
Because Microneedling is gentle and progressive, it generally requires a series of sessions spaced out anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks apart. With each session, results accumulate and the complexion gradually improves. The condition of one’s skin will determine the number of treatments needed. Typically, a person with acne scars will usually need between 6 and 8 sessions to see complete success. Others may only need up to 3 or 4 sessions. Thanks to the experience and skill of our practitioners, we have been named as providing among the best results in Microneedling in which Oakland County has to offer.
HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE?
Approximately 45-60 minutes.
IS EVERYONE A CANDIDATE FOR THIS PROCEDURE?
Though Microneedling is for all skin types and ethnicities, there are some people who the procedure is not suitable for. If you are prone to keloids, or if you have an active skin infection, Microneedling is not for you. Individuals with uncontrolled diabetes should also avoid the procedure. If you are on any type of blood thinners and/or accutane this treatment is not for you.

You can always speak with your physician to see if you can be cleared for this treatment or schedule a free consultation with one of our trusted professionals to find an alternative treatment that will still allow you to achieve the results you’re after.

WHAT IF I AM PREGNANT OR BREASTFEEDING?
We suggest you avoid Microneedling during pregnancy. There is so much hormonal change taking place in the body during pregnancy and there is a slight risk of hyperpigmentation.
CAN MICRONEEDLING IMPROVE THINNING HAIR AND/OR A PATCHY BEARD?
Yes, Microneedling increases blood circulation, stimulates hair follicles, maximizes product absorption and causes the release of growth factors. Growth Factors are responsible for the production of collagen and elastin and collagen is one of the most abundant proteins in the human body.
CAN I GET A MICRONEEDLING TREATMENT AFTER RECEIVING BOTOX/FILLERS?
We advise waiting 2 weeks after Botox and Filler to allow everything to ‘settle’.
DOES MICRONEEDLING IMPROVE SCARS, SPIDER VEINS, AND CELLULITE?
Yes. Microneedling will improve pigmentation, hydration, light scarring, spider veins and can improve cellulite.
WHICH TYPE OF MICRONEEDLING PEN DOES COMPLEXION SPA USE?
Rejuvapen ®, which is a medical-grade, state-of-the-art precision micro-needling device. Rejuvapen is FDA approved, and only licensed medical professionals are allowed to use it. Our treatments are safe, quick, and efficient. Rejuvapen is designed not to penetrate the skin too deep, and the needles are designed to be as small as possible, so they cause minimal injury to the epidermis.

/ADD PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP) TO YOUR MICRONEEDLING TREATMENT

Over-the-counter skincare products can alleviate small issues and protect your skin from damage. However, they may not be enough if you struggle with advanced hyperpigmentation and textured skin. This is why Complexion Med Spa offers Microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

Microneedling with PRP is a highly advanced technique that triggers collagen production and makes you feel youthful again. Microneedling with PRP can address frustrating issues, such as wrinkles, sun damage, and even debilitating acne scars.

HOW DOES THE PRP TREATMENT WORK?

Microneedling procedures are enhanced by applying platelet-rich plasma into the treated tissue. This technology is used by patients who want to speed up the rejuvenation process. To accomplish Microneedling with PRP, our professionals take a small sample of your blood and spin it in a centrifuge. This is what separates the plasma from the platelets.

THE MANY ADVANTAGES OF MICRONEEDLING WITH PRP

It’s important to meet with one of our professionals to discuss if Microneedling with PRP is an effective option for you. During a consultation at Complexion Medical Spa, you will speak privately with one of our providers in a comfortable setting. You can point out any problem areas while we address any questions you may have.

It may take several weeks after Microneedling with PRP for patients to see visible improvements. This depends largely on your skin condition and desired outcome.

As with many other procedures at our facility, consistency is key. It is recommended that women and men undergo several treatments spaced a few weeks apart to achieve the desired results.
