It’s not fully understood how QWO works in moderate to severe cellulite. The enzymes in QWO—called collagenases—are believed to target a structural cause under the skin. It’s thought that QWO works in 3 ways: releasing fibrous bands, redistributing fat cells, and stimulating the growth of new collagen.

WHAT IS QWO®?
QWO® (pronounced kwhoa) is a subcutaneous injection treatment for moderate to severe cellulite in the buttocks of adult women. The active ingredient in QWO® is collagenase clostridium histolyticum. Further information about the specifics of what’s in the injections can be found on the FDA website.
WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED WITH QWO®?
Currently QWO® has only been FDA approved for use in the buttocks area.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
QWO® contains two types of collagen-degrading enzymes that eat away fibrous bands that connect skin to muscle. In doing so, they gradually dissolve the tethers and allow the skin to float up and smooth out. It’s believed that the “septae” (fibrous tissue thickenings under the surface of the skin) are the main cause for the appearance of cellulite. In essence, they tug the skin downward which causes the surrounding fat to appear bulged or rippled under the surface.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING MY TREATMENT?
Before receiving your QWO® injection you’ll need to inform your injector of any allergic reactions you may have had to QWO® or other injectables in the past. You’ll also need to inform them if you have a bleeding problem, are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
At your appointment, your injector will discuss treatment and expectations. After identifying the treatment areas, they’ll use a small needle to inject QWO® which is injected into the fat (subcutaneously) of each single buttock (treatment area). You may receive up to 12 injections per treatment area. Each treatment visit may include up to 2 treatment areas. Visible results may be achieved in 10 weeks. The process takes approximately 10-15 minutes or less.
HOW MANY QWO® TREATMENTS WILL I RECEIVE?
If your aesthetic specialist determines that QWO is right for you, she or he will decide on a treatment plan, including total number of treatments.
Each treatment visit may include up to 2 treatment areas. QWO injections will be given 21 days apart for 3 treatment visits.
HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE?
At each office visit, injections take as little as 10-15 minutes.
HOW MUCH BRUISING CAN I EXPECT AFTER EACH TREATMENT?
QWO may cause serious side effects: allergic (hypersensitivity) reactions, including anaphylaxis and injection site bruising. In clinical trials, women required no post-treatment downtime. Most bruising lessened after each treatment and resolved in less than 21 days.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY/ DOWNTIME?
Getting a QWO® treatment is similar to other injection services such as BOTOX® or Fillers. It requires no anesthesia and had no significant downtime. The procedure is pretty quick and patients are able to walk out of the office and continue their day as normal.
WHAT KIND OF RESULTS WILL I SEE WITH QWO®?
Visible results may be achieved in 10 weeks. In clinical studies, women received 3 treatments of QWO, 21 days apart.
WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?
While some results may be seen within a few days following your first treatment, for best results you may need three treatments over the span of about 2 months.
IS QWO® FDA APPROVED?
QWO® was FDA-approved for use in the USA in 2020.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS/SIDE EFFECTS?
The most common side effects of QWO include: injection site bruising, pain, areas of hardness, itching, redness, discoloration, swelling and warmth in the treatment area.
Allergic (hypersensitivity) reactions, including anaphylaxis. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of these symptoms of an allergic reaction after an injection of QWO®: Hives, swollen face, trouble breathing, chest pain, low blood pressure, dizziness or fainting.
