/Benefits of Dermaplaning

FRESHER, HEALTHIER LOOKING SKIN
This treatment can improve your skin in a number of different ways. It can even out areas of hyperpigmentation for a more even skin tone along with brightening your overall complexion making the surface of your skin smoother. Some patients notice that their pores appear smaller after treatment. Dermaplaning can also help you turn back the clock by smoothing away fine lines and wrinkles and giving the skin a fresh, youthful appearance.
NO MORE PEACH FUZZ
Peach fuzz has a way of sneaking up on many of us. Although its harmless, and it seems almost invisible, it’s often more apparent than we realize. It can be particularly visible when you’re wearing certain types of foundation. Patients are often surprised at how clear and luminous their face looks after peach fuzz has been eliminated.
LESS ACNE
Dermaplaning can clear out the pores, making acne less likely. It does this by getting rid of the peach fuzz and excess skin cells that can trap oil and debris next to the skin. Any topical acne medications you’re using also penetrate more effectively once the surface of the skin has been cleared.
A MORE EFFECTIVE MOISTURIZING ROUTINE
Clearing away dead skin cells and peach fuzz can help improve the effectiveness of the moisturizers you use because they’ll be able to penetrate more deeply. In fact, the days immediately following your appointment are a great time to double down on your at-home routine using your top-quality moisturizers and serums.
LESS SCARRING
The skin cells that are removed during this treatment also help reduce the appearance of acne scars and other types of scar tissue.
PROMOTES COLLAGEN PRODUCTION
The production of collagen slows down with age as we grow older. In addition to exposing younger skin, Dermaplaning stimulates collagen production by exposing them to oxygen, which also results in a smoother texture on your face.
QUICK PROCEDURE
Dermaplaning is also a quick skin treatment, taking only 30 to 45 minutes, and is non-invasive. There is no prep time or recovery time associated with this treatment, which means you can fit it into your schedule without compromising other commitments.
LOW-RISK
Dermaplaning is suitable for most skin types, especially dry skin. You might experience some redness in your face, but that will be gone in a day or two. Dermaplaning is considered to be a remarkable exfoliation procedure because it generally does not cause any side effects.
BETTER LOOKING MAKE-UP
Exfoliation helps your skincare products penetrate the skin and improve their results. With that said, the days immediately following a Dermaplaning treatment are the best time for your makeup. Whether it’s vitamin C serums or hyaluronic acid-based products, Dermaplaning will enhance their penetration because these types of products are lightweight enough to reach the bottom layers of your epidermis, but they’re not able to go much deeper than that without assistance. Because your practitioner removes dead skin cells from your face, it is smoother and will better absorb the makeup pigments. Foundation and powder will also appear smoother on your skin because you will not have small lines or hairs compromising the look of your makeup through creases.
TRIGGERS REGENERATION
Another benefit of Dermaplaning is helping your facial cells regrow, allowing serums and moisturizers to seep into the skin. The procedure helps patients with dry and uneven skin tones, because it gets rid of the cracked epidermis. This type of exfoliation can even take away some types of acne scars. Also, because your skin pores are unclogged, your skin can become less prone to acne breakouts.
PREVENTS BREAKOUTS
During exfoliation, your natural oil, known as sebum, is spread out, preventing it from accumulating in one area, and eliminating dead skin cells. This prevents breakouts, as the chances of clogged pores decrease when dead skin cells are eliminated. Exfoliating also promotes cell turnover, so you get healthier, glowing skin over time.
GOOD FOR SENSITIVE SKIN
If you’re the type whose face gets irritated from one session of dermabrasion, you might be better suited for Dermaplaning. Although it uses a scalpel to scrape skin cells, it is painless.

Dermaplaning treatment is also an excellent option for people with sensitive skin. If you are pregnant, Dermaplaning exfoliation is also a good option, because this procedure does not introduce chemicals in your skin.

SUITS ALL SKIN TYPES
Dermaplaning can be performed on all skin types. However, if you have an allergy to Aspirin, you should consult a dermatologist first before the procedure, because sterile blades might not be safe for those allergic to salicylic acid (found in Aspirin).

/ Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS DERMAPLANING?
Dermaplaning treatments involve the exfoliation of your facial skin with a surgical scalpel. By removing peach fuzz, fine facial hairs, and dead skin cells, this treatment completely rejuvenates the skin. Simply removing those hairs and excess skin cells will help your face rejuvenate much better, thus providing a radiant glow. Scraping dead cells from the surface, while allowing fresh new ones to shine through, can refresh the look, tone, texture, and overall complexion of your skin. Those fresh, plump skin cells also fill in lines and wrinkles minimizing the appearance of scars.
WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED WITH DERMAPLANING?
This treatment is performed primarily on the face, as it benefits the delicate tissues in the facial area.
HOW DOES THIS DIFFER FROM SHAVING?
Compared to shaving, Dermaplaning is an aggressive exfoliation of the skin and the removal of dead skin cells. Although routine shaving gets rid of some cells, it is mainly a way to get rid of unwanted hair.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING TREATMENT?
Dermaplaning treatments are simple and easy. We’ll start by cleansing your skin and removing any makeup. As we begin working with the scalpel, we’ll hold areas of your skin tight and make brisk strokes on the surface of your face as you recline.

The sensation you feel will be gentle and relaxing, and you may hear a dry whisper as the blade crosses the surface of your skin. Once we have finished, we’ll apply a light moisturizer and you can then continue your day as normal.

HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE?
Dermaplaning takes anywhere between 30-45 minutes and can be performed every 3-4 weeks. The treatment itself removes approximately 21 days-worth of dead skin so it is important to let your skin rejuvenate before your next appointment.
HOW FREQUENTLY SHOULD I HAVE THESE TREATMENTS?
Some patients view Dermaplaning as a pick-me-up treatment in the days leading up to a special event. Others schedule these treatments regularly as a way of maintaining their skin and keeping signs of aging at bay. Appointments should be scheduled at least 4 to 6 weeks apart to give the skin cells a chance to regenerate between exfoliations.
IS THE TREATMENT SAFE?
Yes, this treatment is extremely safe when performed by one of our properly trained and licensed skincare professionals at Complexion Med Spa. There is also no downtime associated with this procedure.
WHICH IS BETTER, DERMAPLANING OR MICRODERMABRASION?
That depends on the aesthetic goals you are aiming to achieve. If dark spots, clogged pores and hyperpigmentation are more of a concern to you, then microdermabrasion is the way to go for you. If you are happy with your skin but feel like dryness and peach fuzz is more your issue, then Dermaplaning is the better option.
DOES IT HURT? WILL IT CAUSE CUTS?
Dermaplaning is effective by performing a gentle scraping motion across the skin’s surface. With hair removal such as waxing and threading, most people have the idea that all hair removal is painful, but Dermaplaning is entirely painless. There are always risks of cuts on the skin, however in the rare event that this could happen, they are small and very minor as the pressure used for Dermaplaning cannot cause a deep cut. These nicks and scrapes heal within 24-48 hours. Regardless, you are in good hands with our licensed aestheticians at Complexion Med Spa, who are trained and certified with years of experience.
WILL IT MAKE THE HAIR ON MY FACE GROW BACK THICKER AND DARKER?
No. There are different types of hair that grow on the body; vellus hair and terminal hair. Vellus hair is found on most areas of the body whereas terminal hairs are found on the scalp and underarms. The soft and fine vellus hair on your face grows back at the same rate and texture but a bit finer and thinner as you continue with your Dermaplaning treatments.
WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF ADDING A CHEMICAL PEEL OR FACIAL WITH DERMAPLANING?
Hyperkeratosis is a build-up of dead skin cells on the skin’s surface. By removing this initial layer, a chemical peel is able to penetrate deeper into the dermis resulting in a more effective treatment. The conjunction of Dermaplaning and a chemical peel leaves the skin refreshed and rejuvenated. Together they promote new skin growth and target problems such as aging, sun spots and environmental damage.
AM I A CANDIDATE FOR DERMAPLANING?
This treatment is ideal for patients who have healthy skin that’s not infected. These are patients who want to freshen up the appearance of their skin without undergoing invasive treatment. Because this treatment does not rely on harsh chemicals, it’s also a great option for individuals who have sensitive skin and/or who are pregnant. It will also help reduce the appearance of shallow acne scars, fine lines, and superficial hyperpigmentation.
